Essential Tips for Succulent Care

Succulents need suitable light, controlled watering, free-draining soil and a pot that allows excess water to escape. Perth heat and sun can dry small containers quickly, while prolonged wet soil during cooler periods can damage roots. Species, season, exposure, pot material and soil determine how often each plant needs attention.

Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry

Water the potting mix thoroughly and allow it to dry before watering again. A fixed calendar is less reliable than checking the soil and plant because temperature, wind, pot size and exposure change the drying rate.

• Bottom watering: Place a small pot in shallow water so the mix absorbs moisture from below. Remove it once the mix has taken up water and allow it to drain.
• Top watering: Apply water directly to the potting mix rather than leaving water on the leaves. Continue until excess water drains from the pot.

Compacted mix can repel water or cause it to pool. Loosen only the surface gently and avoid disturbing shallow roots.

Feeding during active growth

Succulents generally need less fertiliser than fast-growing leafy plants. Where feeding is appropriate, follow the product instructions and apply it during active growth rather than using an arbitrary year-round schedule.

• Liquid fertiliser: Dilute and apply according to the label during a normal watering cycle.
• Slow-release fertiliser: Use a product and quantity suitable for the species, container and potting mix, keeping pellets away from exposed stems and leaves.

Pot, soil and drainage

A drainage hole gives excess water an exit and reduces the chance of saturated mix remaining at the base. Use a free-draining succulent or cactus mix rather than dense garden soil in a container.

Low bowls and wide planters suit spreading succulents and grouped planting. Taller pots suit upright species where the root system and proportion are appropriate. An unnecessarily large pot can hold more wet mix around a small root system.

Terracotta usually dries more quickly than resin or fibreglass. That can help in a sheltered or cooler position but may require more frequent checks during hot, exposed weather.
