Horta Bowls

Low and wide, shaped by hand from dense high-fired terracotta, the Horta sits closer to a dish than a pot. Four graduated sizes run from 26 x 13 up to 55 x 25, each with a broad base that keeps a succulent arrangement steady on a table and plenty of open surface for shallow-rooting herbs.

About Horta Bowls

Depth is what defines these bowls. Even the largest runs 55 x 25, so you are planting into a wide dish rather than a column of soil. The clay is dense, high-fired terracotta, handcrafted and strong enough to hold its shape indoors or out, and the kiln does the work on the orange ancient Tidi finish: firing at high temperature bonds the colour into the surface, leaving the rustic texture, aged character and warm earthen tones that settle into a patio without looking new.

Four sizes: 55 x 25, 44 x 20, 35 x 16 and 26 x 13. The two larger bowls read as ground-level features, planted with mixed succulents or cascading dichondra that spill over the rim. The 35 x 16 and 26 x 13 are table-and-plinth sizes, made for outdoor dining tables, console tops and balcony corners where anything taller would get in the way.

Thick terracotta walls hold root temperature through a Perth afternoon, and the clay breathes, which assists drainage. Unglazed clay also dries faster than sealed ware in summer, so in a shallow bowl check the top few centimetres before you water rather than watering to a schedule. View the Atlantis Pots & Planters collection for companion shapes in the same clay, or contact us about a product or project to check current stock and arrange local delivery.

Common questions

How do I plant succulents in a bowl this shallow?

Lay a piece of mesh over the drainage hole, fill with a gritty succulent and cactus potting mix, and set each plant so the root crown sits slightly proud of the soil line. Top-dress with river pebbles or crushed quartz to keep the foliage clean and stop soil splashing up in heavy rain.

Where does the orange ancient Tidi finish come from?

High-temperature firing, reacting with minerals in the surface of the clay. You get an organic blend of warm terracotta, burnt orange and weathered earthen texture that belongs to the body of the bowl rather than sitting on top of it, so there is nothing to peel or fade outdoors.

Do the four sizes group well together?

Cluster two or three of them. Pairing the 44 x 20 with the 26 x 13 gives you a stepped height profile on a low retaining wall, an alfresco credenza or a patio corner, and because every bowl is shallow, nothing in the group blocks a sightline.
