Curved walls, not flat sides. That one decision is why this planter gets specified where a square container would sit too heavily — office forecourts, shopping precincts, hospitality courtyards and contemporary homes. Poly fibreglass composite carries the shape without the mass of concrete, so the planting volume arrives without the handling weight that would normally come with it.
Dimensions are 110 x 60H cm. The width gives a wide planting surface, and the footprint that comes with it resists tipping in open, unsheltered positions — which is where most of these end up. Standard finishes are textured grey and earthy rust, both meant to sit against off-form concrete or natural timber. What plants work best in a 110 x 60H planter this shape?
The aperture is broad and the lip curves, so massed plantings read better than a single specimen. Ornamental grasses planted in a block, succulents, or mounding shrubs such as dwarf pittosporum all suit it. For layered displays, put upright foliage through the centre and let dichondra or ivy trail over the curved lip.
What goes in the base before the potting mix?
Check the base drainage opening is completely clear first. Lay a piece of durable synthetic flyscreen mesh over the hole, add an 8 cm layer of coarse blue metal aggregate so the water passages stay open, then fill with a quality commercial container potting mix matched to your plant selection.
Does it need ballast on an exposed terrace?
The footprint is broad enough that most sites need nothing extra. On a gusty terrace, a 10 cm layer of dense blue metal aggregate or river pebbles across the lower base is cheap insurance — the weight sits low and lowers the centre of gravity.
Can it be used indoors over timber or carpet?
Yes, and corporate foyers and hotels are where we see it most. Keep the specimens in their nursery grow-pots and sit a waterproof plastic liner or heavy-duty saucer inside the base to catch surplus irrigation water. Polished timber, tiles and carpet then stay clear of any moisture.
Cleaning: is the painted finish treated differently to grey and rust?
Not very differently, but be gentler with the paint. The textured grey and rust surfaces shed dust readily, and a soft cloth with warm water and mild detergent lifts splash marks and road film. Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen paintwork is the finish to protect: scouring pads, caustic washes and pressure sprayers will burnish or cut a low sheen coating, and the marks show.
