Structurally, the corrugated curve stiffens the wall, so the fibreglass does not bulge once the trough is backfilled with soil, and on a container this long that matters more than it would on a square pot. Fibreglass handles the rest of what we get here: UV, coastal moisture and temperature swings, with no cracking or rotting.
Planting follows the shape. Clumping bamboo, sansevieria, boxwood topiary and cascading ivy all sit well in an elongated profile like this, and the ivy is the one to reach for if the gloss white reads too hard against your paving. What needs to happen at the base before the soil goes in?
Check the base drainage outlets are clear of obstructions and cover them with fine fibreglass mesh gauze. Then lay a 50 mm layer of 20 mm blue metal gravel before the soil. Winter rain in Perth arrives in volume, and that gravel gets the runoff moving instead of leaving the root zone waterlogged.
Roughly how many litres of mix will fill it?
Filled to normal planting levels, allow approximately 250 to 280 litres of potting media. If that is more mix than you want to buy or carry, sit potted plants on an internal shelf instead and cut the volume right back.
Will it work indoors on timber or tiled floors?
Yes. The base is smooth and non-porous, so leave it undrilled for indoor partitioning. Plant into drop-in nursery pots with drip saucers and the outer trough stays dry, with no seepage onto the floor beneath it.
