Why does the underside gap matter over light-coloured paving?
It gives you somewhere to put a shallow collection dish, sitting directly under the central drainage outlet. Runoff and the dissolved tannins that leach out of potting mix land in the dish rather than on the floor, which is what you want over light-coloured limestone, honed aggregate or porcelain alfresco tiles.
