Flared Urn

Wider at the rim than it is tall in every size: 75 x 30 at the largest, down to 34 x 24 for a tabletop. High-fired Atlantis terracotta, flat-bottomed, with a flared opening that leaves nothing in the way when you plant it out. The low centre of gravity keeps it settled in wind, and the spread of the rim gives trailing succulents and flowering annuals somewhere to go.

About Flared Urn

Wide mouth, flat bottom, no pedestal to rock on — that is the whole logic of this shape. The rim opens right out to the edge, so planting, topping up mulch or swapping a seasonal display is done from above with both hands free. On paving, timber decking or an alfresco tabletop it sits flat and stays put.

The clay is kiln-fired Atlantis terracotta, and the walls are thick enough to slow heat moving into the potting mix through a Western Australian afternoon, so root balls sit cooler than they would in thin resin or metal. Depth is modest by design. The shallow, spreading profile reads best planted with things that fall over the edge — trailing dichondra, prostrate rosemary, creeping thyme, or a mixed succulent arrangement that drapes over the curve.

Three sizes in the Atlantis collection, and diameter is what decides which one you want:

  • AT053/75 (75 x 30): a ground bowl — courtyard roundel, poolside anchor, or a single low mass sitting out on lawn
  • AT053/52 (52 x 35): the one that fits a low retaining wall cap, an outdoor dining credenza or a veranda corner
  • AT053/34 (34 x 24): table and plinth scale, or grouped in twos and threes on an entry console

Shapes that sit well beside it are in the Atlantis Pots & Planters and Urns collections. If you are torn between the 75 and the 52, stand over both at our Malaga showroom — the difference you feel is in the rim, not the height.

Common questions

Which plants suit a shallow, wide bowl like this?

Anything shallow-rooted that spreads sideways. Mixed succulent gardens, trailing dichondra, creeping thyme, flowering annuals and compact culinary herb clusters all do well here, because the wide opening gives them room to run rather than asking them to root deep.

Will it drain properly on paving?

Lift it onto terracotta pot feet, or set it on a free-draining gravel bed. A flat base will otherwise seal the drainage hole against the paving, and a sealed hole is what drowns roots through a run of winter downpours. Keep that path open and water leaves as fast as it arrives.

Does it hold up in an exposed, windy position?

Yes. Low profile, wide flat bottom and the ballast of thick kiln-fired terracotta leave the afternoon sea breeze very little to push against. That is why these end up on open pool surrounds and exposed verandas far more often than tall urns do.

Which of the three diameters should I be looking at?

Work backwards from where it lands. AT053/75 at 75 cm diameter is a ground piece — a courtyard centre bowl or a low focal point. AT053/52 at 52 cm caps a low retaining wall or flanks patio steps. AT053/34 at 34 cm is scaled for outdoor dining tables, console plinths and tight corners.
